What is “Shibuya Crossing” (Scramble Crossing)?

Travel in Japan

Many of you might have heard of “Shibuya Crossing” in Tokyo.
This place is often shown in TV program as a kind of Japanese symbol.
But how do you know it? Let’s see it together!

Where is “Shibuya Crossing”?

“Shibuya Crossing” is at the north west side of Shibuya underground Train station (underground area is red).
“Shibuya Crossing” is circled by yellow in the below map.

From larger scale standpoint, “Shibuya station” is far west from “Tokyo station”. (both are circled by blue below)
It takes around 20 minutes by car, around 30 minutes by subway or train, between “Tokyo station” and “Shibuya station”. To my knowledge, by walking is really hard…
For your reference of sightseeing, some landmarks are highlighted by yellow box below.

What can you find out at Shibuya Crossing?

Thousands people walking and lots of signboards!!

Shibuya crossing at night!

At “Shibuya Crossing”, you can see around a thousand people crossing together, once a green right turned on.
What a tremendous view! Especially at night. Just like Times Square in NYC.

A statue of the dog is a symbol there

Hachi (Akita inu)

There is “Hachi-ko memorial statue” near by Shibuya Crossing.
“Hachi” is a name of dog, and he is classified as “Akita inu” (not “Shiba inu”).
Long long time ago, Hachi waited for his owner every day in front of the station for ten years or so, even after his owner passed away. It’s an old non fiction story which tells the strong relationship between a dog and a human.
Everyone use this statue as a famous landmark to meet up friends or family.

Starbucks SHIBUYA TSUTAYA

Google Map

If you want to have a rest, I recommend you to go to “Starbucks SHIBUYA TSUTAYA” where is located in the building above. “TSUTAYA” is a name of a bookstore, which is with Starbucks (if you are American people, please remember “Barnes & Noble with Starbucks”).
You can stay and enjoy Japan taste coffee there, with seeing people come across the crossway form the second floor!!

For your reference, please see the location I introduced here.
